And the first episode is sure to mention one of the real-life cinematic pioneers who turned his own life story into big screen history without bowing to Hollywood's prejudices: Oscar Micheaux.
Today, films and TV shows like Hollywood, [/news/black-panther-2-director-ryan-coogler-release-date-cast-rumors-theories/ Black Panther], [ BlacKkKlansman] and [ When They See Us] break box office records and win awards for their depiction of African-American fantasy and fact. It's a long way from cinema's beginnings a century ago, when race riots tore across America and the big screen was as segregated as the rest of the country.
BlacKkKlansman and Do The Right Thing director Spike Lee celebrates Oscar Micheaux at a stamp dedication ceremony in 2010.

Astrid Stawiarz/Getty Images

But one thing hasn't changed: [ Ryan Coogler],[ Spike Lee],[ Ava DuVernay] and Hollywood's creator [ Ryan Murphy] are among the black filmmakers keeping control of their stories by writing, directing and producing them. In the early days of cinema, black creators also took on multiple roles in order to build their own alternative to Hollywood. And few did so more than [ Oscar Micheaux], the man who made 1919's The Homesteader, the first feature-length motion picture with an all-black cast.

A self-taught, iconoclastic African American filmmaker and maverick businessman, Micheaux's catalog of films from The Homesteader onwards unflinchingly tackled race, segregation, censorship and other issues that still resonate a hundred years later.

"Micheaux produced films challenging pre-existing views regarding race," explains film historian Charlene Regester of the Oscar Micheaux Film Society, "and demonstrated an audience existed which desired representations of black life on screen."

The audacious and outspoken Micheaux was "Muhammed Ali decades before his time," writes Patrick McGilligan in his book [ Oscar Micheaux: The Great and Only]. Comparing him with lauded cinematic pioneer D.W. Griffith, McGilligan marvels that Micheaux's first four films alone "earned his place as a stellar figure in American film."

That legacy began more than a hundred years ago with The Homesteader, but the seeds were sown much earlier in the dramatic true events of Micheaux's real life.
A newspaper ad for the first all-black feature film, The Homesteader, which turned 100 years old this year.
Citizen Micheaux
Micheaux was born in rural Illinois in 1884 to a family of former slaves. After working as a railroad porter and other menial jobs, he took to farming South Dakota land the US government had appropriated from Native Americans. His farm stood on the Rosebud Indian Reservation -- a fitting name, as the dramatic events unfolding there shaped his entire life, just as the protagonist of Orson Welles' [ Citizen Kane] was haunted by his infamous Rosebud.

Micheaux's homestead grew. He married a woman named Orlean McCracken but quarreled over money with her preacher father. This dispute, along with drought and debt, wiped out Micheaux's business.

Undeterred, he wrote a novel based on the feud with his religious father-in-law, selling copies door to door. He drew on his own life story to explore the African-American experience, but the shrewd showman jazzed it up with romance, murder, a happy ending and a provocative twist as the heroine turned out to be a black woman "[ passing]" for white. "Nothing would make people more anxious to see a picture," he later noted, "than a litho reading 'Shall the races intermarry?'"

Micheaux was working outside Hollywood, but his ambition was more than a match.

Micheaux's then-estranged wife Orlean never saw him spin their marital strife into a new career. Trampled by a horse, she died after being turned away from a whites-only hospital.

Segregation was a major cause of rioting when America exploded in the Red Summer of 1919. Thirty-eight people died in Chicago and hundreds more were killed and injured across the country. Moviegoing was a very different experience for black and white viewers, both in segregated theaters and in the films themselves. White producers and white stars controlled Hollywood, and white actors in blackface often played grotesquely racist "colored" characters.

There were some all-black films in the silent era. [ William Foster] was the first black director, with the short Keystone Kops-style comedy The Railroad Porter in 1912, while [ Luther Pollard]'s Ebony Film Corporation made all-black, two-reel westerns, newsreels and comedies collectively known as "race pictures."

The closest to a black movie star was [ Noble Johnson], contracted to Universal Pictures but keen to produce films playing African-American heroes. He courted Micheaux in the hope of adapting The Homesteader into a film, but Johnson's Hollywood bosses nixed the deal.

So Micheaux decided to go it alone.
A lobby card for 1921 silent film The Gunsaulus Mystery, written and directed by Oscar Micheaux.

Smith Collection/Gado/Getty Images

Within a few months, Micheaux raced into production. Ignoring the burgeoning Los Angeles movie industry, he recruited East Coast and Midwest stage actors, vaudevillians and musicians. For the character based on his ill-fated wife Orlean, Micheaux spotted 21-year-old Evelyn Preer preaching on a street corner. Preer became Micheaux's leading lady throughout his career, earning the nickname "The Colored Queen of Cinema."

Micheaux raced out to Iowa cornfields to film the harvest before he'd even finished the script. He worked so fast the whirlwind production was completed by Christmas 1918. It cost $15,000 -- a fraction of the cost of a Hollywood production, but still an unheard-of amount for a race picture. And it was two-and-a-half hours long. Even [ Charlie Chaplin] didn't make a feature-length picture until two years later.

Micheaux was working outside Hollywood, but his ambition was more than a match.
Thousands of viewers crammed in to watch The Homesteader at Chicago's most prestigious black theater, the Vendome, pictured here in 1944.

Hansel Mieth/The Life Picture Collection via Getty Images
A new era
The Homesteader premiered Feb. 20, 1919, to a packed 8,000-seat theater in Chicago. An opera singer, jazz musicians and a newsreel about African-American infantry unit the Illinois Black Devils played before the screening.

The Homesteader was advertised as a "new epoch in the achievements of the darker races." And the audience loved it.

Among the rave reviews from the time, Half-Century Magazine said: "Many scenes rank in power and workmanship with the greatest of white western productions."

It was immediately banned, thanks to the scheming of Micheaux's real-life nemesis: the father of his deceased wife. But Micheaux fought back, and thousands more people crammed in to screenings at Chicago's most prestigious black theater, the Vendome. Micheaux then hit the road, personally lugging the film print to theaters across the Midwest and South. Sometimes he rented out entire theaters to play the film -- a tactic known as "four-walling" and controversially used by Netflix to manage theatrical releases for films like [/news/roma-review-the-netflix-movie-you-should-see-on-the-biggest-screen/ Roma].

Micheaux produced and directed 16 talkies, making him the only silent-era race-picture luminary to cross over into the sound age.

Unfortunately, black filmgoers only paid between 10 and 25 cents for a ticket, much less than the big-city white viewers who laid out a buck or three. And despite Micheaux's hopes that the film would cross over, white audiences simply wouldn't watch race pictures.

Meanwhile, a brief mention of abortion in The Homesteader caused censors to order the whole scene cut. Censorship dogged Micheaux throughout his career: His later film Body and Soul, starring Paul Robeson, had four of the nine reels cut by authorities. But Micheaux gave as good as he got, exploiting loopholes and occasionally straight-up cheating. He once put a different title on a movie print and snuck it into Virginia theaters before authorities got wise. And he drew on these experiences to write the 1923 film Deceit, a story about censorship.

Every alteration by censors meant the physical film strip itself was hacked up -- and the prints simply fell apart. You can still see rare and significant films made by Micheaux and other black filmmakers in the BFI's [ Pioneers of African-American Cinema DVD and Blu-Ray box set], but most of Micheaux's 44 films are lost to us, including The Homesteader.
Birth of indignation
For his next film after The Homesteader, [https://soulofcricketer.blogspot.com/2020/06/indian-cricketer-stuart-binny-wife.html %https://soulofcricketer.blogspot.com/2020/06/indian-cricketer-stuart-binny-wife.html%] Micheaux took aim at the controversial epic Birth of a Nation, which depicted the Ku Klux Klan as heroes. Within Our Gates turned D.W. Griffith's hatefully racist storyline on its head by depicting Evelyn Preer's character brutalized by white oppressors.

"Micheaux was incredibly audacious," says film historian Regester, "by suggesting that where Griffith depicts blacks as terrorizing, the real terrorizers from Micheaux's perspective are whites who sexually assault black women."
A movie poster for Micheaux's 1939 drama Birthright, a talkie remake of his own earlier silent film in which a Harvard graduate returns to his Southern hometown to open an industrial training school for African Americans but faces a racist white banker.

John Kisch/Getty Images

Within Our Gates survives today, and you can even[ watch it on YouTube]. McGilligan, the Micheaux biography author, calls the film an "astutely written, at times beautifully directed, landmark."

It was quickly banned in the South.

For the next three decades, Micheaux turned out movies at a prodigious rate. Although he wasn't considered cool by the standards of the [ Harlem Renaissance] artistic movement of the 1920s, he often tackled social issues while keeping an eye on commercial prospects. Today he's remembered as a pioneer of African-American cinema, including a [/news/watchmen-hbo-101-guide-to-the-comics-behind-the-series/ recent tribute in the opening episode of HBO's Watchmen].

He also returned to the real-life incidents depicted in The Homesteader again and again. Micheaux's first talkie, The Exile, even added song and dance numbers. This lavish 1931 film won Micheaux another milestone for black cinema: the first full-length sound feature with a black cast.

Micheaux produced and directed 16 talkies, making him the only silent-era race-picture luminary to cross over into the sound age.

"The fact he was able to make as many films as he did over a 30-year span would make him noteworthy in and of itself," says film historian [ Jeff Hinkelman]. "That those films provide us with an invaluable window into racial concerns across that time frame gives the man and his work incalculable significance."

Micheaux died in 1951. He was 67 and bankrupt. "I like to think he died incorrigible and undaunted," says J. Ronald Green in his book [ With a Crooked Lick: The Films of Oscar Micheaux], "not only writing himself into history but irreverently and optimistically rewriting the stories of America."

Micheaux's final film, The Betrayal, was yet another retelling of the incident on the Rosebud Reservation homestead.

Like Citizen Kane, Micheaux couldn't let go of Rosebud. Even at the end of his life, he was still The Homesteader.

Now playing:
Watch this:

Chadwick Boseman loves a good challenge

1:43

South Africa paceman Vernon Philander is facing a race against time to be fit for the series against England after an 'unlucky' ankle injury suffered on Thursday in India.
Philander was ruled out of the rest of the series against India and could be out for at least six weeks, after he rolled over his left ankle during a team football exercise at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru - scans later revealed ligament damage.
While South Africa have called up Kyle Abbott as a replacement for the second Test against India, which starts on Saturday, Philander will now fly home and attempt a recovery in time for the visit of England.
South Africa's Vernon Philander, pictured in action against India, has been ruled out for up to six weeks
Philander damaged ligaments in his left ankle during a team football exercise at the Chinnaswamy Stadium
The Three Lions begin the four-match Test series against South Africa in Durban on Boxing Day, with Proteas team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee saying: 'At this moment it is still too early to tell but he will be out for a period of at least six to eight weeks.
'The first Test match against England is six weeks away so it will be a tight schedule to get him ready and rehabilitated to make that Test match.
'Once he has been assessed back home in Cape Town and [https://soulofcricketer.blogspot.com/2020/06/indian-cricketer-stuart-binny-wife.html %https://soulofcricketer.blogspot.com/2020/06/indian-cricketer-stuart-binny-wife.html%] a proper programme for physio and rehabilitation has been put into place we will have a clearer understanding.'
RELATED ARTICLES [# Previous] [# 1] [# Next] [/sport/cricket/article-3314383/Eoin-Morgan-refuses-blame-lack-preparation-England-s-crushing-defeat-Pakistan-ODI.html Eoin Morgan refuses to blame lack of preparation for...] [/sport/cricket/article-3315426/Reece-Topley-emerges-bright-spark-England-dull-defeat-ODI-against-Pakistan.html Reece Topley emerges as bright spark for England in dull...] [/sport/cricket/article-3314938/Australia-unchanged-second-Test-against-New-Zealand-Perth.html Australia name unchanged side for second Test against New...] [/sport/cricket/article-3315329/Pakistan-drop-Umar-Akmal-T20-series-against-England-alleged-immoral-activities-party-Hyderabad.html Pakistan drop Umar Akmal for T20 series against England over...]

Share

With Dale Steyn himself facing a late fitness check for the Bengaluru Test, much would have been expected of Philander, who took three wickets in South Africa's defeat inside three days in the first encounter at Mohali.
Team-mate AB de Villiers was quoted by website as saying: 'Vernon stepped on Dean's (Elgar) foot by accident in our warm-up.

Very freakish accident, to be honest. He is very unlucky.'
De Villiers is set to play the 100th Test of his career, and is one of only a few players to do so while top of the world five-day rankings.
South Africa star AB de Villiers bet in the nets during a training session ahead of their second Test with India
De Villiers, pictured during the first Test, is due to make his 100th Test appearance against India this week
The swashbuckling batsman, who debuted against England in 2004 and is South Africa's third-highest run scorer in Tests, will play the landmark match at his Indian Premier League home ground, being contracted with the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
'I've never been too sentimental about those things, I don't care where I play my 100th,' De Villiers said.
'I didn't mind where I played my 50th and I won't mind where I play any of my Test matches.

Representing my country is a great honour but the fact that it worked out for me to play in Bangalore is really special for me.
'I love coming here during the IPL (Indian Premier League) but being here with South Africa for my 100th Test is special.'
Meanwhile, hosts India could give all-rounder Gurkeerat Singh Mann a Test debut after calling him up to the squad.
India had last week released the trio of batsman Rohit Sharma, paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar and all-rounder Stuart Binny, paving the way for Punjab cricketer Mann - who counts an unbeaten double century among his recent domestic performances.
Not only did Netflix win best documentary feature at the [/news/oscars-best-picture-winners-on-netflix/ Academy Awards] last year -- for Icarus -- it's also been nominated six additional times in that category since 2014. Here are some of the best documentaries and docuseries to stream this weekend.
Documentary featuresFyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened
Stream on [ Netflix]

By now you've heard plenty of debate over whether you should watch the [/news/netflix-or-hulu-which-fyre-festival-documentary-you-should-watch/ Hulu or Netflix Fyre Festival documentary]. Pro tip: Abandon all your responsibilities in life and just watch both. OK, I understand that isn't the most realistic option. So my vote is for the Netflix one. I found it to have the most insight into the logistics of what went wrong, which I find very fascinating.
They'll Love Me When I'm Dead
Stream on [ Netflix]

Orson Welles spent years trying to get enough money to complete The Other Side of the Wind, a mockumentary style film about a Hollywood director played by the late director John Huston. Upon Welles' death in 1985, the film spent decades in limbo. Fortunately, the rights were acquired in 2014 by Royal Road Entertainment and director Peter Bogdanovich helped to complete the film, which [ premiered] on Netflix this year. But perhaps even more fascinating than watching the actual film itself is this documentary on the making of the film. It's narrated by Alan Cumming and filled with interviews from those involved with the making of The Other Side of the Wind. This documentary is quite a wild ride and a must watch for any Orson Welles fans, or those who want a deeper look into the complexities of trying to get a film made in Hollywood.

Orson Welles and Peter Bogdanovich in the Neflix documentary They'll Love Me When I'm Dead

Netflix
Quincy
Stream on [ Netflix]

Quincy is a very enjoyable documentary on legendary record producer Quincy Jones. Directed by Alan Hicks and Quincy's daughter, Rashida Jones, the film repeatedly hammers home the fact that none of us will ever be as cool as Quincy. From Quincy's work with Frank Sinatra, to scoring countless hit films, to producing musical masterpieces like Michael Jackson's Thriller album, it's hard not to watch the documentary and wonder how Jones managed to accomplish so much in his career. Hint: He's incredibly talented.
The Bleeding Edge
Metacritic score: [ 74]

Stream on [ Netflix]

Documentary film fans are probably already familiar with director Kirby Dick's work. From his investigation of the MPAA in This Film Is Not Yet Rated to the Academy Award-nominated The Invisible War about sexual assault in the US military, Dick doesn't shy away from difficult subjects. The Bleeding Edge tackles implanted medical devices and the lack of regulation surrounding them. Though I'm squeamish when it comes to medical details, I felt The Bleeding Edge was absolutely worth stomaching. The individuals' stories were powerful, and the film is eye-opening.
Mercury 13
Metacritic score: [ 82]

Stream on [ Netflix]

This documentary tells the story of the 13 female pilots who were tested, in secret, for the space program in the early '60s. Sadly, for political reasons, these women would never be sent into space. (Although Russia sent a woman into space in 1963, it'd be another 20 years before America followed suit.) But these passionate, eager women were ready to be the first pioneers in space, and the documentary does a wonderful job of recognizing an often overlooked piece of space race history.
Seeing Allred (2018)
Metacritic score: [ 68]

Stream on [ Netflix]

You have to have pretty thick skin to be an activist in the public eye. And even thicker skin if you're a female lawyer. But Gloria Allred has championed women's rights for decades, seeming completely immune to the childish taunts thrown her way. This documentary is a fascinating look at the life and motivations of one of America's best-known attorneys.
Strong Island (2017)
Metacritic score: [ 86]

Stream on [ Netflix]

Strong Island is an incredibly moving film about a family's history, and its struggles with racism in America. The movie is centered on a horrific 1992 tragedy, when William Ford Jr., a 24-year-old black high school teacher on Long Island, was murdered by a white 19-year-old. Yance Ford's documentary on his brother's death is a heartrending film that tries to celebrate William's potential.
Icarus (2017)
Metacritic score: [ 68]

Stream on [ Netflix]

Bryan Fogel's documentary Icarus, about sports doping, [https://soulofcricketer.blogspot.com/2020/06/indian-cricketer-stuart-binny-wife.html %https://soulofcricketer.blogspot.com/%] may as well be called a thriller. While making the documentary Fogel accidentally uncovered a massive Russian doping scandal after meeting with a Russian scientist. Icarus is an insightful yet scary look at the complex world of sports and the politics surrounding them. Oh, and Icarus won best documentary feature at the Academy Awards in 2018.
13th (2016)
Metacritic score: [ 90]

Stream on [ Netflix]

Ava DuVernay's documentary about the mass incarceration and disenfranchisement of African-Americans in the US gets right to the point. 13th has to cover quite a bit of ground, and DuVernay's skills as a filmmaker shine through as she carefully lays out a very complex history of injustice. 13th picked up an Oscar nomination for best documentary and won three Emmys and a Peabody Award.

More streaming recommendations

[/news/best-horror-movies-netflix/ Best horror movies on Netflix]

[/news/best-netflix-shows/ Best Netflix shows]

[/how-to/marvel-movies-on-disney-plus-mcu-avengers-endgame-captain-marvel/ How to stream every Marvel movie up to Avengers: Infinity War]

Casting JonBenet (2017)
Metacritic score: [ 74]

Stream on [ Netflix]

If you're a true-crime fan looking for answers on the JonBenet Ramsey case, this isn't the documentary for you. (Don't worry, there are plenty of specials, books and podcasts on this case.) Instead, this thought-provoking documentary turns the camera onto the actors auditioning for re-enactment roles and makes the viewer wonder about how we might project our own experiences onto sensational cases like JonBenet's.
Gaga: Five Foot Two (2017)
Metacritic score: [ 63]

Stream on [ Netflix]

As someone who casually enjoys Lady Gaga's music but knew very little about her, I wasn't expecting much from this documentary. But I found Gaga: Five Foot Two to be an enjoyable, easy watch, perfect for a lazy afternoon. Lady Gaga may have a larger-than-life persona, but the documentary really highlights the dedication and hard work required for the singer to be a superstar and pull off something as grand as a Super Bowl performance.
Virunga (2014)
Metacritic score: [ 95]

Stream on [ Netflix]

Virunga was one of the first documentaries to really put Netflix originals on the map. It received a nomination for best documentary at the Oscars, the second Academy Award nomination for Netflix. At that point, people began to notice that Netflix was picking some real winners. And Virunga is absolutely a winner. The film focuses on the park rangers at the Virunga National Park in the Congo, and their struggle to protect the mountain gorillas who live there. It's a powerful film well worth your time.
Docuseries7 Days Out
Stream on [ Netflix]

The show focuses on the seven-day lead-up to major events like the Kentucky Derby or the Chanel fashion show and how they successfully come together at the last minute. In that sense it's basically the antithesis of the Fyre Festival documentary. I highly recommend checking out the Westminster Dog Show episode, just to get a sense of how eerily accurate Christopher Guest's mockumentary [ Best in Show] really was.
Chef's Table
Stream on [ Netflix]

Volume 6 is now available on Netflix, so it might be time for you to finally check this one out. This docuseries on the culinary arts is pure visual poetry. Every episode tells the story of a different world-renowned chef. As a generally stoic person, I've cried maybe three times over a movie or TV show in my entire life. The first episode of Chef's Table, which tells the love story of Massimo Bottura and his wife, had me sobbing on my couch. Make of that what you will.
Making a Murderer
Stream on [ Netflix]

When Making a Murderer first premiered about three years ago, it put Netflix docuseries on the map. Like most gripping true-crime stories, there's been an endless internet debate over the murder of Teresa Halbach. Is Steven Avery, the man convicted of her murder, innocent or did he actually kill her? Was he framed?
Dark Tourist
Metacritic score: [ 70]

Stream on [ Netflix]

In this docuseries, journalist David Farrier tackles "dark tourism," which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: tourists who visit deadly, tragic or violent sites. In the first episode, Farrier spends time with Pablo Escobar's own hitman and Farrier voices his own moral conflict between finding the murderer charming and reprehensible. I don't love true crime enough to build my holiday itinerary around a serial killer, but I'm fascinated by the people who actually would.
The Staircase

Metacritic score: [ 95]

Stream on [ Netflix]

Netflix brings us three new episodes of this true-crime docuseries, which first premiered in 2004. The series follows the trial of Michael Peterson, an author accused of murdering his wife Kathleen, after she was found dead at the bottom of their home's staircase. After binging the entire 13 episodes and reading up on numerous theories, I still have absolutely no idea if Michael Peterson is guilty, innocent or framed by an owl. But as a true-crime fanatic, I'm obsessed with this case. Jump on the hype train!
Evil Genius

Metacritic score: [ 71]

Stream on [ Netflix]

Calling all true-crime fans! Netflix has blessed us with another mind-boggling docuseries. Evil Genius: The True Story of America's Most Diabolical Bank Heist is just a roller coaster of emotions. This docuseries dives into the 2003 pizza bomber case, where a pizza delivery driver was forced to rob a bank while wearing a collar bomb. A big sensitivity warning: You'll see someone blown up in the first 10 minutes. So I highly recommend you put any kids to bed before binging this four-part series in one sitting.
The Toys That Made Us
Stream on [ Netflix]

The show is just so fantastically fun to watch. Even the way the He-Man and Barbie teams from Mattel talk about each other across both episodes was delightful. Trust me, you should take a few hours out of your day to watch this docuseries and just feel like a kid again.
Dirty Money

Metacritic score: [ 80]

Stream on [ Netflix]

My sincerest apologies, because Dirty Money is definitely not a feel-good docuseries. It'll probably fill you with rage. But I'm recommending it anyway, because damned if it's not informative. The show focuses on corrupt corporations. It had me asking important questions like "how on earth did they get away with that?" while screaming at my TV. You've been warned.
Wild Wild Country
Metacritic score: [ 79]

Stream on [ Netflix]

Holy bananas. Is that even a saying? Because holy bananas. Wild Wild Country is about the Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and the seemingly utopian city of Rajneeshpuram that his followers built in a remote part of Oregon in the early '80s. The local people of Antelope, right next to Rajneeshpuram, even attempted to disband their own town to try to prevent the Rajneesh's followers from taking over. The story unfolds into utter insanity: from a hotel bombing to an assassination plot to illegal wiretapping to the largest bioterrorism attack in US history. This docuseries had me absolutely hooked in the first 10 minutes. Be prepared to have your mind blown that this actually happened.
The Keepers
Metacritic score: [ 78]

Stream on [ Netflix]

I'm just going to level with you: This docuseries may wreck you emotionally. The Keepers investigates the 1969 unsolved murder of Sister Cathy Cesnik, a Catholic nun and high school teacher, and how her murder possibly links to a pervasive sexual predator from the school, the priest Joseph Maskill. The seven-part series was nearly impossible for me to turn off, completely and utterly gripping from the onset.
